Common Questions

Welcome to Frequently Asked Questions where you will find answers to my families most common questions.

Q. WHEN SHOULD WE BOOK A NEWBORN SESSION?

A. As soon as possible! It is best to book your newborn session while you are still pregnant. I take on a limited number of newborn bookings per month to allow for the unexpected arrival of each baby. Newborn photography is also highly specialised, requiring longer sessions than most.

Q. WHERE ARE NEWBORN SESSIONS HELD?

A. Most newborn sessions are held in my studio in Holgate, minutes away from Erina Fair. I have a huge assortment of props, beanbags, blankets, wraps and backdrops to choose from which makes the studio an ideal choice.

Q. WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?

A. Please feel free to contact me to discuss what is best, if you are unsure. Generally speaking, I advise soft neutral colours and warm tones for newborn sessions. Avoid bright colours, bold prints and logos. Most importantly, wear something comfortable that you'd find suitable if you were to print a large canvas or framed print to hang on the wall in your home.

Client Wardrobe: I have a ever-growing collection of dresses and clothing for babies and children that you can access during your session. Please contact see the client wardrobe here.

Q. DO WE NEED TO BRING ANYTHING?

A. If you have something of sentimental value, like an heirloom blanket that you would like to incorporate into your session, then you are most welcome to do so. I suggest popping a dummy in the bag, just for the session, even if you are not keen on them. Always bring extra bottles of milk, spare nappies and snacks for children.

Q. WHEN CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE THE IMAGES?

A. You will receive an email with a link to a private gallery about 2 weeks after your session. You have 28 days to choose your images and products. You will be kept up to date on the status of prints and products that have been ordered on your behalf.

Q. WHY IS IT BEST TO PHOTOGRAPH NEWBORNS SO EARLY?

A. For this style of newborn photography, it is recommended that babies be under 14 days of age, with the optimum time being between 6-10 days. This is because babies are sleepier and easier to settle during this time. Photo sessions held after 14 days can run longer as babies are harder to settle and more alert/awake, so please be prepared for this. Also, babies like to curl up beautifully before 12 days so many of the images in baskets or on posing backdrops work best during this time. Babies need to be very relaxed and in a deep sleep to achieve these poses. My priority is the comfort and safety or your baby, so we follow the baby’s lead.

Q. WHAT ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE POSES?

A. Your baby’s safety and comfort are of utmost importance. I encourage parents to sit in hands-reach of their baby while I am positioning them or snapping away – which often causes them to startle. Not all images are as simple as they appear to be – many are composites to allow for mum or dad’s hands to support their baby. When choosing your newborn photographer, make sure your photographer puts your baby’s safety first. It’s important that baby’s well being is not compromised in order to get a shot. Even during a session with a professional newborn photographer, you are your baby’s number one advocate.

Q. CAN I PURCHASE ALL OF THE IMAGES TAKEN?

A. I carefully select and edit your session images at my own discretion. I do not sell or provide RAW files or unedited images as part of my services.
